Who are the Ontario Racewalkers?

We are a group of dedicated and committed coaches and athletes of every ability from absolute beginners to world champions

What is training like?

All training programs are designed to fit the athlete’s needs from beginners to advanced. Some athletes just want to get fit, others want light competition and most want to be the best they can be. Our training programs fit all of these needs.

Do I have to live in Ontario to be part of this club?

No! Don’t let the name Ontario Racewalkers (ORW) fool you! Some of our athletes live outside Ontario and communicate virtually with the coaches. Joining ORW means connecting with a diverse group of athletes living across Canada. However, there will be opportunities to meet the team and the coaches in person when you compete in racewalking events.

Do I have to be in tip top shape to be part of Ontario Racewalkers?

Our members are at all levels of fitness and ability. The coach will work with you to develop a specific program to meet your ability and level of fitness. But watch out! You may find yourself getting into great shape fast.

Do members compete? If so, Where are the races held?

Yes, many members enjoy completion. Events are held locally, nationally and internationally. It’s a great way to travel and stay fit! But you don’t have to compete if you don’t want to.

What is the age requirement?

We accept athletes from 10 to 100 years old. Stafford, the head coach, manages the Junior Development Program for Athletics Canada where our top junior athletes compete in an international competition with the USA.

What is racewalking?

Racewalking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground, so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position. Click on the “Training” tab and all will be clear.

What are the benefits of racewalking?

Racewalking doesn’t require expensive equipment and nearly anyone can participate, from recreational walkers and hikers to international athletes. Racewalking will give you a much better workout than “regular” walking, and it’s much easier on your body than jogging or running. So why wait? Give it a try, you’ll be surprised at how much fun and beneficial it can be.

What is the difference between racewalking and power walking?

Racewalking and power walking are two different activities. Power walkers position their arms like runners and swing them more vigorously and they move at a faster pace than street walkers. Racewalkers must learn a very special technique that will allow them to move at a much faster pace than power walkers. Look at the “Beginners” training video and slide presentation to see the differences.
